Banking jobs remain one of the top career choices for government job aspirants in India. The IBPS PO and SBI PO examinations are the two most prestigious banking recruitment exams. Both recruit Probationary Officers (POs) for public sector banks, but there are important differences in salary, exam pattern, difficulty level, and career prospects. This comparison will help you decide where to focus your preparation.

Overview

IBPS PO (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection — Probationary Officer): Recruits POs for 12 public sector banks including Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, Bank of India, and others. IBPS conducts a single common recruitment process, and selected candidates are allotted to different banks based on performance and preference.

SBI PO (State Bank of India — Probationary Officer): Recruits POs directly for the State Bank of India, India's largest bank with over 22,000 branches. SBI conducts its own independent recruitment process separate from IBPS.

SBI PO has a significantly higher salary due to a higher special allowance, better HRA structure, and additional perquisites like furniture and newspaper allowance.

Career Growth

IBPS PO Career Path:
Scale I (PO) → Scale II (Manager) → Scale III (Senior Manager) → Scale IV (Chief Manager) → Scale V (AGM) → Scale VI (DGM) → Scale VII (GM)

Promotions in IBPS banks depend on annual appraisals and internal exams. The pace varies between banks — some are faster promoters than others.

SBI PO Career Path:
Junior Management Grade Scale I → Middle Management Grade Scale II → Scale III → Scale IV → Scale V (Assistant General Manager) → Scale VI (Deputy General Manager) → Scale VII (General Manager) → CGM → DMD → MD & CEO

SBI has a more structured and faster promotion track, with clear timelines for each grade. The sheer size of SBI also means more opportunities for specialization and lateral movement (IT, international banking, treasury, etc.).

Posting and Transfer

IBPS Banks: Initial posting is usually in the home state or a nearby state. Transfers happen but are generally not as frequent as SBI in the initial years.

SBI: SBI has a policy of regular transfers across circles (states). While this means you may be posted anywhere in India, it also means exposure to different environments and faster learning.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose SBI PO if:

  • You prioritize salary — SBI PO pays ₹10,000–15,000 more per month
  • You value brand recognition and faster career growth
  • You are comfortable with transfers across India

Choose IBPS PO if:

  • You want more vacancy options and a higher probability of selection
  • You prefer being posted in or near your home state initially
  • You want to appear in multiple bank selections with a single preparation

Best advice: Prepare for both simultaneously — the syllabus is 90% identical. Give SBI PO priority since the salary is higher. Most serious banking aspirants apply for both and also include IBPS RRB PO, IBPS Clerk, and SBI Clerk as backup options.
